Proposal:
How to set up a F3F course

Reason:

  1. Safety, judges are not sitting in the line of danger

  2. More precise and a lot more easy task for judging.

  3. Allowed to fly in the best lift zone.

  • The pilot must present the model to the judge. It means you cannot fly under the slope edge.

  • In Norway we have used this setup for many years now and it works really well.

  • This setup can probably not be used at all slopes around world and this is just a guide to setup the course in a safe way.

    With regards from Norwegian pilots:

    Espen Torp and Rolf Rettedal

Every year the CIAM have their meetings to go over the rules
and make changes to "our" benefit...
Make sure you read the Agenda and tell your Ciam member or the Coordinator of your sport how you feel about the rule changes that are proposed... Norway`s Ciam member is Narve Jensen.
F3F has some serious rule changes this year and Norway have for a long time used and told the community how the safety can be better and how to better set up a F3F course.

5.E.1. CLASS F3F - Radio Control Slope Soaring (Provisional Rules)

a) 5.F.1. Definition
1) GERMANY
Discard the words
"of ten rounds"
Reason: At some contests with good weather conditions it is possible to fly
more rounds. With more rounds the influence of luck will be reduced.
2) CZECH REPUBLIC
Replace the words "of ten rounds" by "announced by the organiser before the
start of the contest"
Reason: At some contests with good weather conditions it is possible to fly
more rounds. With more rounds the influence of luck is reduced.

b) 5.F.2. Characteristics
1) GERMANY
Add at the end of the paragraph:
<minimum radius of fuselage nose 7,5 mm in all orientations (see F3B nose
definition for measuring technique)>.
Reason: Safety.
2) CZECH REPUBLIC
Add to the end of the paragraph:
<Radius of the nose of the model aircraft must be minimum 7.5 mm in all
orientations (see F3B nose definition for measuring technique)."
Reason: Safety

c) 5.F.5. Number of Attempts - GERMANY
Add after subparagraph d):
<The reflight shall happen as soon as possible considering the local conditions and
the radio frequencies. If possible, the model aircraft can stay airborne and has to
be brought to launching height, launching speed and launching position before the
new 30 second period is started by the judge>.
Reason: Security. In case of distant landing area the model aircraft can stay airborne.
Forcing the contest flow. Reducing the influence of changed weather conditions in case
of a reflight.

d) 5.F.6. Cancellation of a flight - GERMANY
Add after subparagraph h):
i) any part of the model aircraft crosses the safety line during the measured
flight.
Reason: Security. Harmonizing with corresponding rule in F3B. Depending on the local
conditions and the number of flown rounds a penalty of 100 points could be
compensated with a few seconds better contest time.

e) 5.F.8. Flying Task
1) GERMANY
Add at the end of the paragraph:
<If some irremovable obstacles don't allow 100 m the course length may be
set between 80 m and 120 m>.
Reason: At some good slopes the conditions(topography, natural cover,
security) don't allow 100 m course. For short contests it is not reasonable to
travel a long distance to a better slope.
2) CZECH REPUBLIC
Add to the end of the paragraph:
"If some irremovable obstacles don't allow 100 m the course may be shorter
but not less then 80 m. This exception does not apply for world or
continental championships."
Reason: At some slopes the conditions don't allow 100 m course. For short
contests it is not reasonable to travel a long distance to a better slope. Sometimes
a suitable slope is very very far away..

f) 5.F.9. Speed Course - GERMANY
In second sentence of third subparagraph replace the words: (i.e. the centre of gravity)"
by the words:
"(i.e. the fuselage nose of the model)"
Reason: Clarification. The words "centre of gravity" are not a sharp definition for
recognizing a "base passing" event.

g) 5.F.10. Judging
1) GERMANY
Replace the whole paragraph by:
<Safety: The organiser must clearly mark a safety line representing a
vertical plane which separates the speed course from the area where judges,
other officials, competitors and spectators stay. The organiser must appoint
one judge for observing the safety line crossing. Crossing the safety line by
any part of the model aircraft during the measured flight has to be
announced to the pilot by a sound signal and the flight has to be cancelled
(see 5.F.6.i)>.
Reason: Safety. The present wording is partly unclear and partly useless.
2) CZECH REPUBLIC
Replace the whole paragraph by:
"5.F.10. Safety: The organiser must clearly mark a safety line representing
a vertical plane which separates the speed coarse from the area where
judges, other officials, competitors and spectators stay. Crossing the safety
line by any part of the model aircraft during the measured flight will be
penalised by 100 points subtracted from the sum after conversion, the
penalty being not discarded with the result of the round. The organiser
must appoint one judge for the task of observing the safety line crossing."
Reason: Safety. The present wording is partly unclear and partly useless.

h) 5.F.12. Classification - CZECH REPUBLIC
In the second sentence add before the words "The lowest round score" the words "if
more then three round were flown"
Reason: Sometimes at smaller contests the weather conditions don't allow flying
enough rounds. Then discarding one round would reduce the number of results to an
unacceptable degree.

i) 5.F.15. Interruptions
1) GERMANY
In the second sentence add before the words: "The lowest round score..." the
words
"If more than three rounds were flown"
Add after the second sentence:
"If more than fourteen rounds were flown, the two lowest round scores will
be discarded."
Reason: Sometimes at smaller contests the weather conditions don't allow flying
enough rounds. Then discarding one round would reduce the number of results
to an unacceptable size.On the other hand at contests with a large number of
flown rounds discarding the two lowest rounds will reduce the influence of
temporarily bad conditions.
2) GERMANY
Add after subparagraph b):
<If these conditions arise during the flight the pilot gets the right for a
reflight>.
Reason: Clarification. It happened that the CD cancelled the result of a pilot
flying at insufficient conditions not regarding that the pilot was satisfied with his
own performance. It is fair to allow the pilot to keep his result even if achieved
at unfavourable conditions.
3) CZECH REPUBLIC
Add after subparagraph b): "If these conditions arise during the flight then
the pilot gets right for a new flight."
Reason: Clarification. It happened that the CD cancelled the result of a pilot
flying at insufficient conditions not regarding that the pilot was satisfied with his
own performance. It is fair to allow the pilot to keep his result even if achieved
at unfavourable conditions.
