Wouldn't you know there were wifi on Arlanda airport in Sweden
also ;-)

Every seat have LCD with cameras under plane and front to choose
from + the usual "were are we". Over Island the sunset came up
and pasing Norway I could see my homeplace.
1.august 2005
Heading home and are now online on intercontinal wifi. Pretty
cool. Not often one gets to do this. There are a few things one
should do on intercontinal flights and I shall not mention
all...
Anyhow I bunkered up with a lot of barbeque sauce and have a lot
of images in my head from this trip. I may have to go on a diet
before I start on the sauces (that we travelled many hour to
get).

The last I could see of USA
31.july 2005
Last day in USA that could be used for something useful. Had a
great flying session with the Louisville gang and me and Ed
Wilson fixed Tony's new Vandal. I got to fly the thing first and
it surprised me to be a nice model. Not as stiff as we European
wants it but good stuff for TD.

Tony with his new Vandal bought from Don Richmond

OK a powerplane snueaked up on me...
30.july 2005 - Finishing off
Back in Louisville after Nats and Gordy gives me all he has with
heavy breakfast, local DS-slope, dinner with wife, Horseshow
with daughter (Kentucky is famous for horseracing), indoor
American football (also with Tony and Megan) and finished off
with karaoke. Is it possible to do more in one day?

Boiling Bourbon and Bourbon bull...

Left: Jojo with Gordy's model. Right: Gordy's daughter over!!!
HIGH!

Football indoor in American is not like Europe.
High music, girls, high music and a Pike player..
29.july 2005 - RES and Nostalgia
Today the last and relaxed events were going to happen and so
they did. I was so relaxed about the flying that I was way of on
that thinking. I did nice but missed in the last round
completely. In Unlimited yesterday I was sorry to miss that 3rd
place but today I had a big laugh. It was a relaxing end to the
Nats adventure and a landing out there and a "walk of shame"
back was ok. First round Marc Gellert made me trim the AVA and
fly 7min off sticks (Tx on the ground, plane flyes by itself). I
am very thankful to all the super guys I met up with and I also
took some time off today to see the Nats museum. Pictures might
come up later but this THE best museum to be in. Our own story
is kind of told here though they do not have a Pike Superior
(but Skip Millers world champion model nr.3). In the morning I
also made a few shots of the site we were in. This is just a
SMALL part of the AMA grounds. It would be very cool to have the
worlds here. The site is big, loooong way to any trees, they
have the people for it, Camping grounds on field, plenty of
hotels and friendly people. Might be a long way for many and
Canada just had one worlds in F3J but I think it can happen.
Hey guys I might be here next year also... Now in Louisville for
some extra action with the guys down here. Back in Norway on
Tuesday.

28.july 2005 - Award banquet
The Banquet was nice and most got a few prices in the raffle. I
got my share and I can tell you there were extremely good
prices!! Well worth those 20dollars. The food was ok and the
beer was excellent. Stayed away from the strong stuff though...
My camera flash did not work strangely so no pictures. BTW Gordy
and I entered the team Louisville together with Tony and Ed. We
got to be 3rd of 9 teams ;-) Good
night
28.july 2005 - Unlimited final day
Just a small update before a banquet tonight. Tomorrow is RES
competition and you guessed right. I am in there too...
Today I screwed up but not enough to get off wood as they call
it here. I was doing well in 3rd place and had some solid
scores. The weather today was great with a lot of thermals.
Problem was that it is just like home. So easy to get a flight
that "sucks" and there are no throwouts here. In round 8 I came
home early and were even just a few meters form the mark. So I
dropped from 3rd to 8th but worked my way up to 7th in the last
round. Anyhow I had a new great day at this huge flying field
that is just for us modellers. And to finish 7th with 104 pilots
is --- well very good. The competition was fair and the
organizing so far have been super. Lots of people helping out
and all runs like clockwork (but still in a settle normal way).
Today we had a little higher temperatures but not enough to get
me sweating hard. Wind was on and off with thermals. Tom
Kiesling won with Daryl Perkins right behind. Daryl could take
him on the last flight but needed full score with only loosing 4
points. He lost 10. I have
video
HERE (4,5mb .wmv) of how you
can do a 90 landing with last round pressure... BTW Tom Kiesling
did not use skeg while Daryl was (a pin under the plane to stop
it on the ground). Off to
banquet after a shower.
Results are HERE

It was almost a podium...

27.july 2005 - Unlimited day 1
Today we started a twoday event of unlimited. This is a Thermal
duration event much like F3J but we use winches, launches one at
a time, get a 100inch landing tape and the task time might vary.
Basically the CD decides how long the task is according to the
conditions. Just as 2m actually but you can use as big plane you
want inside the FAI limits. The scores are like this: The best
time in the group gets 1000p. Then on top you get the landing
scores. 0-1inch is 100points, 1-2inch=99points, etc. We are
standing apx. 5m from the mark behind a fence and there is a
landing pattern so that you can not circle in the landing zone.
The
weather today was just as home. varied conditions and NORMAL
temperatures ;-) There was a bit wind that resulted in a lot of
landings outside the tape and a lot of broken winch lines.
Basically linebreaks are much more common here than with a F3B
winch back home. There are some rules about this so you do NOT
want to brake that line. That means you got to tap the pedal but
the zoom can be full pedal mostly. Starting altitude is almost
as F3B but turnarounds are further out I think (did not meassure).
The "turnaround trolls" (kids) brings the lines back with
golfcars. Cool... We all had a good day out.
104
competitors is a large event and it all takes time so we did not
finish on the field before late in the evening. Tomorrow we will
be finished earlier though and there will be an banquet.
Personally I am doing better than I thought and are up there
with the best though I can not match Daryl Perkins (Insanity)
and Tom Kiesling (Supra) in the landing zone YET. But I keep
sliding to the left and will fix that landing flap for
tomorrow... I fly my Brio and it flew really well today. I was
very confident in it and it worked well in the calm evening
conditions. Cant wait to get those Giant tips. There are all
sorts of planes here and a lot of cool but also strange looking
planes (comparing to Europe). In the evening I got to check out
the AVA (Kennedy Composites)
I borrow for RES later in the week. BTW I have had great help
(spotting) from Marc Gellert and Gordy Stahl today.

Tom Kiesling got good help from Egyptians ;-)
27.july 2005 - morning
Thunderstorm past by during the night. Right now we have a hot
Norwegian summer... It will clear up during the day. The weather
is going to be great during the weekend as a high pressure
builds up. Unlimited starts today. Are you wondering about the
rules? You will find them in

Results (72 competitors):
1. Tom Kiesling, home made
2. Jo Grini, Organic
3. Johnny Berlin, Duck
ALL final results HERE (.pdf)

Robert Burson got this great one.
It was HARD today!
Windy conditions and 2meter competition is cruel to
the scores. I know. It was blowing 15-20mph (6-9m/s)
and hot with temperatures in the 90-95's (32-35c).
We got 5 more rounds today and ended just before the
rain hit us after the prizegiving. The CD was
driving us hard with 10 and 8min tasks then 6minutes
for the last ones. Many got poor times and that's
good for me since I am not a good lander compared to
many others. Tom Kiesling deserved the win with
excellent flights and landings though I had a small
chance catching up if I got it all right. I did not.
I was coming home late in the last two rounds and
was only a few meters from the mark each time (the
landing area is uphill kind of..). Typical flying
today was up front moving as the lift was there or
went thru. Later in the day we could hook up and go
way backwards and fairly high on some slots. The field we are
on are HUGE but still people land in the corn and beanfields leaving them searching for hours. The
event went smooth and scores are out after each
round!

Jojo on practice. Yes he got about 10 flights on it
before comp..
Sorry I forgot to pick
up my memorystick and did not photo the results. I
was kind of exited about the result... Thanks guys.
I had 6 different timers today and timed for a bunch
myself. They all did a nice job. There were some
carnige today. Not that many blown in launch but the
launches was ruining models because of bad throws,
loose or bad repairs and bending rods. Many guys use
aluminium rods because the bend but do not break.
This is a nice contest form and very difficult to do
good in. Everybody learns some here. A new day
tomorrow. We are no off to Unlimited. Ok I am very
happy though the first place slipped.. Might have
been a strange situation with a Norwegian winning I
guess...
Some of the pictures are from Robert Burson and Don
Richmond

26.july 2005 2m last
day - morning
Looking good with nice weather and lower
temperatures than yesterday. Expected high winds and
maybe a bit of leas in the models...

25.july 2005 - 2meter
first day (2day event)
I maybe should say something like "2M sucks" but hey
that's not it. This is an event for the masses that
really likes thermal competition on cool winches and
do the thermal thing with extra beating in the
landing. To take part here really makes you a better
thermal pilot and a better landing pilot. And the
models are from standard, thru ready half price of a
3m model and homemades. To build a homemade for this
is ok because you don't need super spar and still
are fairly competitive. I really like it though I do
not handle those landings like the US guys do.
Luckily in this event the
Contest director decides
the flying time each round and we were doing mostly
10min that hurt some today. I did my times and got
fairly good landings. All in your group start at
after each other (the line manager says spot 1,2, 3,
etc...) and the times in your group gets normalized
to 1000nds. then the landing score comes on top.
This year they did a 100inch (1inch is 2,54cm. So
total 2,5m) tape with 100points for best.
Many were looking at Daryl Perkins again that are a
super pilot but gives it all and sadly lands out. So
Tom Kiesling again leading thru the day until the
conditions fall dramatically. The guys under him got
to be at the top (atleast for a while) and I am
happy though am also just waiting to get hurt. There
is NO throwouts here (cool).
The competition runs
smooth though one thing is a bit strange. Your group
starts to fly before the previous have landed. This
means you might have a total different helper. Your
friend might be preparing for the next group. So I
had 4 different helpers in 6 rounds. But they all
did well! The winches are provided by the organisers
and works well with no problem it seems. Today was
extremely hot and a bit windy. Tomorrow will be very
windy they say. I am flying a Organic I borrow from
Kennedy Composites and it is well equipped and
flying nice. Pretty cool to see all the planes that
are made in USA. More than half of the planes are
made here and flying well. Sorry I did not make more
pictures. Too much spotting for guys and flying. AND
drinking water.
HERE are the scores
after 6 rounds (.pdf).
Thanks to Robin Meek for the Excel files. I have all
detailed scores and will post when I have time
(tired now)
Oh and follow the
great "Nats

24.july 2005 - F3J
last prelim. and finals

4 Arrogant pilots and our dedicated timer.
WOW I am getting
tired. But it is sure fun to get tired this way ;-)
We got in a few more rounds of preliminaries before
the finals in F3J Nats 2005. I was still in my team
"Arrogant Bastards Ale" (we got t-shirts, beer,
mugs, etc) and this team really knows how to have
fun. Don Richmond is the drive force and our boss
but basically we are equal guys that has same sense
of humour. We did well and I climbed from 8 to 4th
in the prelims and got into the finals. My Pike Brio
is THE weapon in this humid and hot air (and windy
today). We started the finals way after lunch and I
screwed up right away. The wind had picked up with
gusts up to the FAI limit (12m/s or 26mph) and just
as I was releasing my plane for the first flight a
gust came in from the side. I went fast knifeedge to
the right and got it up but hit Daryl Perkins line
and cut it off leaving me popping off and Daryl in
20m. I relit (could have gotten a reflight but as I
understand protests and stuff is not welcome
here...). Daryl asked for a reflight he got
offcourse. Anyhow I flew it out and got an ok score.
In the landing I got in tiny bit too fast and both
flaphorns came off leaving me with my Superiors that
were set up for light conditions. Used two rounds
with lead and CG in the wrong place before I found
that sweet spot again and got a good 4th round.
Robert Burson and Don Richmond repaired it quick but
did not get it fast enough to repair it before the
last round (epoxy too slow). No throwout over here and that's good I think. Almost
everybody wants to get rid of that throwout-rule
now.

F3J at the Nats. Up to 11 planes start at the same
time.
Anyhow there were a
LOT of carnige today both crash in start, spars in
start and especially landing out in the corn field.
Now we are talking about 3-4m high corn and no way
to find it... Example Daryl Perkins goes way out
there with a thermal (they are going fast in that
wind) and the humid moist makes him loose his Sharon
out of eyesight. He spun into the ground way out
there. Daryl got a big plane so they went for a
overhead search with GPS with no luck but found
other guys planes. Daryl probably only had one plane
and gave up offcourse and retired (anyhow no
throwouts in finals).
In the finals (10 pilots) I got to be nr.6. Not
super-happy but I got 3 more comps to be National
champion... After the comp. I did some circle towing
with F3J line just stuck in the ground and got great
hights. Our team was easily the most consistent
highest launches all day. Cool.
Winner? Well Kiesling deserved it with 4x good
scores...
Rules:
We were going to
fly by the
FAI rules but did some changes. Like we did not
have a throwout (almost all agrees on that). The
reflight in the finals was a "crossed line"
snapping. Dont think that gives reflight (though it
happened dring WC Finland and was fixed in later
rules). The reflight was whole group and not the
drawn group as the rules say. That means pilots got
the "better score" like the rules dont want anymore.
I dont have access to detailed scores to check
"funny results"...
But we all got a nice competition ;-)

Winner Tom Kiesling and CD Phil Renaud

This is what you get by launching all your teams
planes and your own..
But after we had a good Arrogant Bastard Ale and had
a good laugh.

Norwegian flag shows were the guys are in the corn
field.
They had radios and others were guiding them.

23.july 2005 - F3J
first day
Up early today for some preliminary rounds of F3J
Nats. I was into the "Arrogant bastard ale" with
some good guys that showed up to be even better than
I thought. Basicly the team consist of Jojo, Don
Richmond, Rob Glover and Larry Ruble. But we also
got help by timer and towers for the day and had a
blast. We might not be the best team out there but
we sure very soon got to be a close team that worked
really well! Personally I screwed up in the first
round. We did not get a full test of the timing
equipment and since I was first I got really
confused to say the least. They were running a
computer and electronic device from a big trailer
with 2 speakers on the middle of the flightline. The
timing was nice until I was in for the landing. I
was expecting either 5 beeps and a long or one beep
at the end. Then the voice said two words and the
beep was on top of the third word. I was sure I was
in but according to a pilot on the next team I was
off. I had dumped it on the word of this guy and was
sure that I was on the ground before the last word
but ok I am flying and are pretty tense... (like
always). Anyhow I was doing ok after that and with
no throwout I am now in 8th place.

MY team!! Arrogant bastard ale
The other team-mates
also did nice although I don't know the scores yet.
Don Richmond impressed the most with smooth flying.
Rob Glover went really nice also but got hurt in
some rounds. Larry Ruble had a brand new plane and
needed some dialling in before he got it going. But
he did better and better. It is hard to say who was
at what spot in the competition since I never
checked the scoreboard and with 11 spots.. But it
was a super hot day with good conditions in the
morning and calm very difficult conditions for the
last rounds. We got 5 rounds and will have more
tomorrow morning before the finals. Gordy was
missing me I guess... He had some real big problems.
He will be hooking up with me for the other comps
for sure. We will kick some ass later!! In the
evening they had this super barbeque and some of the
guys tried to get me drunk. NOT! The food was
excellent and I am really having a good time around
all these smiling folks. Looking forward to
tomorrow. Oh btw the CD is running it not fast but
smooth with no problems. 5 rounds is nice on a day
with long lunch and start-up problems (missing some
landing spots)

Jojo in for a nap?

Barbeque

Strange guys... 2 strange situations... 1 normal ;-)

well....
More pictures later of planes and stuff.. I am
tired...
Ben Wilson has some great pictures at
Louisville site

22.july 2005 - DLG
So we finally arrived in Muncie on a hit summer
day..
The guys were flying DLG and 4 out of 29 had dropped
out but there were still a big bunch of models in
the air all the time so plenty to look at and good
flying. The conditions were hard with some 2-5m/s
winds and small thermals that only some guys got in
the hot conditions.
I met up with a lot of guys I only know from names
and emails but now I got a face on them. Gordy did
not fill me up with ribs today but he got a bunch of
other stuff (yes it was good). Anyhow Phil Barnes
was THE guy today. Congrats! 2nd Doug Pike and 3rd
Bruce Davidson. I had to cheer for the
Louisville guys that ended on 3rd and 4th offcourse
;-) After the competition I assembled an Organic I
have borrowed from
Kennedy Composites and flew it 10-15 times. Got
it all sorted out and are ready for 2m contest after
the F3J. Thanks Barry!! In the evening we went to a
mexican restaurant and I actually had salad (Gordy
was not sitting next to me and the waitress was with
me first).
Now I have left Gordy... Robert Burson have taken
over the responsibility of that crazy Norwegian ;-)

22.july 2005 - morning
Finally some clouds and 70F... (20c)
Rained in the night but there are some blue spots in
the sky.
Ground is so hot that it dried up in no time.
Waiting for Gordy to pick me up and we are off to
Muncie

21.july 2005
Late
start today. Since Gordy is "never home" he needed
to fix up things home and a strange skinny guy comes
over to spraypaint his fence and stuff. Now this guy
is not doing anything right and spraypaints all
other stuff including Gordys windows and car. We
still manage to get in some good breakfast, a full
stack of ribs for lunch and then heads out to the
flying field for a local comp supposedly. We never
had a big comp. but had a good time with the
Louisville guys untill me an Gordy just "had to"
have some competition. So we got some timers and
went for 3 rounds of 5min tasks and a landing with 1
point per feet. The winch was a typical american
winch with braided 300 line and a retriver. It was
the first time I used one of these but it was a "no
brainer" and very cool to see that retriever getting
the line back so fast that you could almost have man
on man contest. They had a bit of an issue with the
retriever that someone had bent a bit on but
basically it was a lot of flying and no collecting.
Cool - I almost want one myself... The contest
beetween me and Gordy were pretty "tense" as we flew
in the same air. Me with my Brio and Gordy with his
brand new Pike Superior. The air would have been
challenging with 10min task but 5 min was no problem
even with this extreme humidity and heat (90-100F or
32-37celcius). Gordy got in a bit late in the last
two rounds so he bounced off since he came in fast
but basically we flew some hot and good rounds.
Results:
Jojo: 4:58 99p - 4:59 99p - 5:01 98p = 8points lost
Gordy: 5:00 95p - 5:01 98p - 5:02 95p = 15points
lost
Timers: Rick Whiteworth and Jason Langley

Gordy nails that landing
I am very tired now after a mexican meal with almost
all the Louisville guys. Thanks guys - it was a nice
day at the field. Be sure to visit their website:
http://www.louisvillesoaring.org/
Tomorrow we will leave for Nats and will arrive in
time to see the last rounds of the DLG hopefully.

Gordy with Ed Wilson in the background. Then Gordy
with a full stack of ribs.

Cute DLG and Gordy getting timed by one of the few
planet earth's girl pilots. Meagan did not enter
Nats but I think she will soon ;-)

All happy guys after a hot day
21.july 2005 - morning
Woke up to some rain but just 1 hour later there is
blue sky and calm hot weather. A little breeze
outside that might be nice...

20.july 2005
First real day in USA and Gordy took me out to every
corner and turned every stone around. I guess mostly
to be seated in a car or be inside were
air-conditions is running all day long. There was
not one single place around here that did not have
an air conditioner. And when you walk out to 90-95F
(33-35celcius) you feel the difference I can tell
you. BTW the humidity is very high so it IS hot
here. But cool enough we went of for some flying
with one of the "good guys". Lets see if you can
spot his name by the picture. It begins with a B....
allergic to cats (like me) and he loves fishes.
Actually he is THE saltwater guy in the aquarium
world to meet. So after a big stack of ribs to lunch
- me flying B.... (ok then Bruce Davidson) XP-4 10
flights and Gordy's AVA 3 flights we sat down for
some chicken and beer before Gordy got me into 2
more free nights on Holiday inn (no not that cheap
kind we have in Norway). Might go for a bubble-bath-tub
later tonight or tomorrow morning. I got my
luggage and cant wait to get a new shirt on. See some
of you tomorrow for a local TD contest probably and
then we will be in Muncie midday Friday.
Bruce has a good throw. I have flown Jonas Ekman's
"Bug" and its the same wing but different fuse. The
bug felt better but Bruce's turned a bit better if
you were nice to it. But this was his B-model and
bagged planes are different from plane to plane.
Personal setup can make a huge difference here.

Bruce is a "waterman"

Right off the press: Gordy will try RES. Not at Nats
though, but he did get those landings today just
inches away from my cap. That's good when this was
his first day out with a rudder/elevator/spoiler
plane. We had to use a few hours
in his cellar though to get the tailfeathers right. On the
mid-picture you see Gordy with what he sells mostly
and on the right Kentucky Derby... yes the building
is 100 times bigger than the picture...

Cool clouds forming around us.
Gordy got this one with my camera

19.july 2005
06:41 Norwegian time and 00:41 Louisville time!!
I am there and Gordy picked me up as promised!
Gordy sticks to it even just home from a trip
himself.
I almost lost the flight from Chicago to Louisville
but ran like a maniac from Terminal 5 to 2. Seems I
have to work out...
Pretty cool to have broadband (wifi) on the flight
with SAS but I used 1 hour to set it up and barely
managed to save this website before my batteries
drained out. Need some burning Lipo's in this
computer...
Clothes is still in Chicago (guess my legs were
faster) but planes are here.

Picture from the plane. Cool with cameras on the
plane both under and in the nose. One could see
straight ahead on each chair. But the wifi sucked.

Ice crystal on the window

High speed connection was "unavailable" at times but
worked
22:00 local time (home)
Finally no way back. Passed Grenland and in 10.000m
I am writing this!!
17:00 local time Denmark.
Waiting for the plane from Copenhagen to Chicago to
be ready. Some tech problems they say. So I am stuck
here looking at the girls and drinking some beer (o
no I am an athlete and don't drink - so disregard
that statement..). Good thing they have wifi in the
airport then..

Yes that's the "Lift ticket to Norway" cap. Thanks
to Espen (www.et-air.com)
for a contribution on my trip..

13.july 2005
Started packing and did some "altitude training" in
the mountains. The snow is still there and my
Shongololo (an South African RaceMachine) had
severe flutter while DS'ing hard. Great day. I am
all set and 3 Pike's with skegs are ready while 2 (AVA
and Organic) await me "over there" from Kennedy
Composites. The JR radio from Horizon have to be
charged though..
